Social Constructivism in Middle Childhood

Social construction is defined as an "idea about the nature of reality accepted by members of a particular society at a particular time on the basis of shared subjective perceptions or assumptions"(Papalia, 2008, p.7).

Middle childhood also known as school age occurs during 6 to 12 years of age

"Children come to each experience with a rich background and ideas of their own, and as they engage in interactions and experiment with their ideas, they develop new theories and ideas" (Chaillè, 2008, p.5).

"Children in a constructivist classroom are constructing an understanding that they are building their own theories and constructing their own knowledge through interaction with a knowledgeable adult and other children" (Chaillè, 2008, p.5).
